Day trips from Khao Lak

Land Excursions around Khao Lak

Khao Lak is located about 80 km north of the island of Phuket on the Andaman Sea; it is without exaggeration one of the most beautiful and attractive areas of Thailand. Unbelievably, there are no less than 7 national parks within a 70 km radius of Khao Lak. As you can imagine, this opens the area up to a wealth of outdoors activities. From Khao Lak as your base you can discover the different ecosystems of the surrounding national parks, from mangrove forests full of animals and waterfalls to karst landscapes with their striking limestone vistas.

Khao Sok National Park

The Khao Sok National Park covers an area of 739 sq. kilometres. It is full of breath-taking limestone cliffs that form an alluring karst landscape. These high hills reach up to 900 metres and were once mighty coral reefs. The jungle is composed almost entirely of primary rain forest. This is one of the oldest rain forests in the world, and with its incomparable abundance of flora and fauna, it has a lot to offer nature lovers. Here you can find hornbills, prehistoric deer, several gibbon species, sun bears, jungle elephants and even wild tigers (well, not anymore, but in the old days). A typical day trip here would include an elephant trek through the jungle to a hidden waterfall for a swim; local lunch in a tree house restaurant; gently canoeing down the Sok River; and visiting a mini zoo and orchid garden.

Another memorable way to explore Khao Lak is to ride on two or three wheels. From lush evergreen mountains to the thriving farming countryside and beachside trails, you’ll see a plethora of scenic vistas either bicycle or ATV (quad bike) tour. Biking around Khao Lak in particular is an easy-going, adventurous and joyful way to explore the region via your own steam, cycling from one interesting spot to the next. Whether you are a new cyclist or experienced rider, there are a variety of routes and itineraries to suit all abilities. And for those that like a bit more grunt, taking to the hills with an ATV can be truly exhilarating, especially after the rains when it’s a muddy slip and slide!

All this and more is possible within the immediate vicinity of amazing Khao Lak. There are many tour companies offering a wealth of full- and half-day trips operating in the area. These companies are able to accommodate any group size, language preference (within reason!) and special requests (e.g., vegetarian lunch).
