3 Things to Know Before Going to Phuket to Spend the Holidays

MANATHAI HOTEL & RESORT

With its crystal-blue waters, fabulous sandy beaches, and warm sun, Phuket has become one of the most popular destinations in Thailand. With that, you might just be tempted to plan a holiday destination trip to Phuket. However, while you might plan on the go, it helps to be prepared to know what you’ll be facing from the moment you arrive on this beautiful island.

Here are three things you need to know before you head to Phuket to spend your holidays:

1. Visa

Visas are perhaps the first thing you must think about if you’re traveling to Thailand then to Phuket. Check on Thailand’s site on the different nationalities and their requirements to attain a visa. In some cases, you might not need a visa if you’re in the country for tourism purposes for a maximum of 30 days.

Whatever you do, just don’t get caught when your visa expires, or your 30 days are up. Otherwise, you might be jailed, deported, and even blacklisted from entering the country.

2. Arrival

When you finally arrive at Phuket International Airport, you will need transportation to bring you from the airport to your accommodation. However, if you opt for any of the taxi drivers or even limousine drivers in the immediate area, you’ll be paying quite a bit of money.

If you do want to use a taxi to head straight to your accommodation, exit the airport doors and turn right, looking for the taxi meter sign.

If you want a cheaper alternative to this, you can opt for the bus. Be aware that they won’t take you to your place of interest, but somewhere nearer, perhaps, which is on the left-hand side of the Arrival Hall. The drivers wear orange uniforms and wait outside their vehicles, so you cannot miss them.

3. Transportation

When you’re in Phuket, you might be wondering what kind of transportation you can take to get around. One of the more popular forms of travel, especially with tourists, is the tuk-tuks. Not only are they great for short-distance travel, but they’re also thrilling. Unlike the tuk-tuks found in Bangkok, which are essentially three-wheeled bikes, the tuk-tuks in Phuket are more like minivans without windows.

Do note that these forms of transportation can get expensive. If you try to negotiate with the drivers, you might find that their temper might be shorter than you expect. With that said, agree on the price and destination, and you’ll have a smooth and thrilling experience.

Motorbike riders are also an option you can choose. Always be sure to wear helmets when taking these guys to travel, as they’re a little wilder than you might be used to. Your travel insurance might not even cover this kind of transportation.

If you want safety, opt for Songthaews, trucks that are commonly found to transport people. You can also hire cars to take you around. Just be sure to choose a company that doesn’t hold your passport, and remember to take before-and-after photos of the car you are renting out so that you won’t be blamed for damages you didn’t cause.
