With a stunning backdrop of clear blue skies and warm tropical sunshine, Koh Samui is the perfect destination to make any, and all adventures come to life. Read on to discover our top recommended activities and attractions you must seek out on the island. Just make sure you allow enough time to try them all amongst your R&R sessions!

1. HIN TA & HIN YAI

Hin Ta and Hin Yai are interesting rock formations on Koh Samui’s south coast, between Lamai and Hua Thanon. They have been a source of mirth and wonder for both locals and visitors alike for many years. These rocks, known as Grandpa (Ta) and Grandma (Yai), look, respectively, like male and female genitalia. These rude rock formations have been naturally formed over thousands of years. The local legend of their incarnation is more colourful, more or less a love story went awry and these two rock formations remained a standing testament to everlasting love. The view from the rocks is spectacular, stretching out across the sea to nearby islands. While you’re in the area, make sure you go a little further along to explore the traditional Muslim fishing village of Hua Thanon, abuzz with local life.

2. JET TIME

Every wondered what it would be like to be James Bond with all his cool gadgets? Wonder no more! Take to the seas and enjoy a range of jet-related water sports on Koh Samui, like the Jetpack. The Jetpack will allow you to soar above the waters as you control a flying apparatus strapped to your back. For those who prefer something a little more solid beneath their feet, give the jet board a go; it’s more akin to snowboarding on water. And lastly, for those who like speed, a Jet Ski Safari is going to tick all your boxes. Head off with an experienced, licensed guide and snorkel equipment to discover all the hidden bays and beaches in the area. All of these water sports are now highly popular on the island and widely available at various certified rental locations where you will quickly learn the necessary skills required to master them and have a great time on the water.

3. BUFFALO FIGHTING

If spectator – and somewhat brutal – sports are more to your liking, how about a bit of buffalo fighting? This historical game was traditionally held as entertainment after the rice harvest season during lively festivities. Nowadays it has become a regular gig with both locals and visitors enjoying the thrill of placing a bet on these mighty beasts. There are several ‘stadiums’ around the island, most being a basic cleared area under the coconut palms with a wall of bamboo matting to hinder the view of those who haven’t paid for a seat. The fight ends when one animal runs away, usually well before either animal gets hurt. While animal rights activists would be up in arms, this is a way to see a real slice of southern Thai life in action. The fights always attract a big crowd of locals excited a see a good old dust up.

4. SAMUI BUTTERFLY GARDEN

Located near Laem Natien this stunning park makes for a perfect family-friendly outing. It features a stunning and unique oasis, housing thousands of tropical butterflies. Within the observatory, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the breathtaking Koh Samui coastline down below from your lofty vantage point on the hillside. Within the park, you will come across a number of both common and rare varieties of butterflies. In addition to the Butterfly Garden, there is also an Insect Museum and Bee House, allowing you to observe the inhabitants carefully. Overall the garden is beautifully landscaped with colourful flowers and tropical foliage, so budding photographers won’t want to forget their camera. If all of that isn’t enough, you can also take a glass-bottomed boat tour from the garden and enjoy viewing the local coral reef around nearby Natien Beach.

5. BUNGEE JUMP

We all have a ‘bucket list’ experience or activity that we’ve always wanted to try out. If yours involves strapping a rope to your legs and jumping headfirst off a high platform, Samui Bungy Jump is here to make your dreams come true! In the heart of Chaweng – one of the most beautiful beach areas in Thailand – you can get a turbocharged dose of adrenaline by plunging 50 metres into a purpose built bungee splash pool off Soi Reggae. With the internationally accredited Samui Bungy Jump team, you are in safe hands, however, remember that you jump at your own risk. For both beginners and experienced jumpers, they guarantee an experience of a lifetime. Once you’re properly strapped-in, you’ll be hoisted to the top of the 50-metres crane overlooking the stunning coastline below. After having a chance to take in the awe-inspiring view and taking a deep breath you’ll jump (let’s hope not pushed!) headfirst into the 3.5m deep splash pool waiting down below. You’ll be coming back for seconds!

6. SAMUI SNAKE FARM

The Land of Smiles is home to over 170 snake varieties, 50 of which are venomous; so there’s certainly no shortage of creatures to see here! For those of you who like reptiles, a visit to the island’s premier Snake Farm to get an intimate look at these animals is a real must. Not for the weak-stomached, the brave snake wranglers put on daily shows wherein they coax the reptiles to display their natural instincts. While there is no main attraction amongst the large variety of snakes on display, it’s fair to say that the king cobras and giant pythons get the biggest reaction. If all that fails to please, there are also centipede and scorpion shows, not to mention demonstrations of one of rural Thailand’s most popular traditional sports: cock fighting. For those who want to get an even closer look, the reptile zoo offers brave visitors the chance to handle a live snake.
